Hosting public-facing tools has its risks

Today, Hetzner banned this server’s IP address temporarily because they got two abuse reports. After updating Privatebin on the T25B Pastebin to v2.0.3, I neglected to disable the ‘file attachment’ feature, which I’d enabled for testing. Within 48 hours, abusers were there posting offensive images.

Anyway, for that reason, the pastebin is configured not to allow file attachments. It’s a pity, it is a really useful feature, but you just can’t leave it public-facing without any access restriction.

So, the T25B Pastebin is still up and running, but only for text and code pastes.

  1. P.S. Hetzner were pretty quick to apply the IP block. They only give you an hour or so to respond before they do it. But they were also very quick to respond when I requested the unblocking, with the satisfactory solution applied to deal with to the complaint.
